Think again when it comes to Germany

Nestled in the heart of Europe and with a rich history, diverse lifestyle and vibrant cities, Germany is fast shaking off the heavy burden of its past, and is now stepping into the spotlight with a new lease of life.

The success as hosts of the World Cup in 2006, and the country's tourist office slogan "Think Germany - now think again", has put Germany firmly back on the map as holiday destination.

There are few cities in the world that have a history as rich as Germany's capital, Berlin. There are many echoes of the past to see, such as the Brandenburg Gates and the Hackesche Höfe courtyards. But combine these with modern art galleries, thousands of clubs, bars and restaurants and an atmosphere where anything goes, to get a flavour of what Berlin once was, and what it has become.

On the flip side - The Black Forest gives you a picture-perfect look at Germany, with its enchanting villages nestled in beautiful scenery, fabulous spa resorts and skiing and hiking facilities. You can see stately homes or castles, sample some delicious wine, or for those who want to get a bit more active, Lake Titisee and Lake Schluchsee are perfect for water sports.

Other highlights include Munich, with the famous Carillon (glockenspeil) that plays every morning in the town square, King Ludwig II world-famous castle at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, where it is said Walt Disney took his inspiration for his enchanted castle and Frankfurt, or the city of contrasts, with its downtown skyline and the way it can place history and the modern world side-by side.

Weather in Germany tends to be at its best from May to September. Life moves outdoors and beer gardens, festivals and markets become the place to be. Like in most of western Europe, there is always the possibility of rain. However regardless of where you are staying in this diverse country, there will always be some way to pass the time should you get unlucky.

And should the sun shine down on you, Germany boasts some fabulous beaches, complete with white, fine sand that makes the perfect setting to while away a summer day. The most popular beach destinations are the Frisian Islands, Sylt and the stretch between Rendsburg and Kiel on the German seacoast.

But to truly get a taste of Germany, a festival is most certainly the way to do it. Held all year round, these festivals have become a way of life for locals. The Munich Oktoberfest is a fine example of this, but there are many others taking place up and down the country to whet your appetite, and give you a real feeling for the country.

All in all, Germany has more than enough to offer its visitors. Cosmopolitan cities, stunning scenery, a rich history and renewed sense of pride in this country means visitors are certain to come away from Germany already thinking about when they can return.
