South America – It’s hard to know where to start!
Travelling to South America can mean many things to many
people.
Some go for the spectacular Amazon rainforest or the exhilarating white water rafting and adventure
treks. Others go for the carnival atmosphere found in parts of Brazil and
Argentina. And then there are the travellers who go to areas of South America that are off the beaten track, to delve into history and soak up the culture.
As this shows, South America is a vastly differing continent – with extremes of culture and terrain to be
found. With at least 12 countries to choose from in this vast expanse of land, there is no shortage of travel
destinations. |

Countries in South America include Peru with its infamous Inca Trail, Ecuador with the Amazon rainforest on its doorstep, Uruguay and its colonial towns and pristine beaches and Guyana, a country living in South America but with a foot firmly in the Caribbean with regards to culture. |
Then there are the big players on the South American continent, Brazil and Argentina. Brazil is a land of outstanding beauty, with stretches of its ample rainforests remaining unexplored. The streets literally throb with energy, and music and dancing are entwined into everyday life. Beaches here are clean, the cities staggering and the culture rich and energetic.
Argentina is passionate, yet sophisticated and has a distinct European air about it, mixed in with the underlying energy of Latin America. Buenos Aires certainly lives up to this, and visitors will marvel at its cobbled streets, brightly painted houses and the locals who keep up their flair and love to sit and discuss politics, or Argentina’s other love, soccer.
Other countries making up South America include Chile and it’s famous island Easter Island, Columbia and Venezuela. There are also a number of provinces owned by other countries, such as French Guiana, of course part of France, and the Falkland Islands, which are part of the UK but were the subject of conflict between Britain and the Islands’ nearest neighbours Argentina in the 1980s.
More and more tour operators are now offering holidays to many places in South America. Uruguay is an up and coming holiday destination, and other aspects of South America, like the Inca Trail in Peru, have always been popular with tourists. Venezuela has a fabulous landscape that continues to draw visitors in. With snow-capped mountains, the Amazonian jungle and stunning Caribbean-esque beaches it is not difficult to see why. Venezuela also boasts the world’s highest waterfall – Angel Falls. It is about 16 times the height of the world’s other famous falls, Niagara which explains its position as Venezuela’s number one tourist attraction.
If this brief overview has not described at least one place you would love to see, then we would be surprised. Taking a holiday to South America would be fun, enriching and even a life-changing experience. Take our advice and visit South America.
